Sigma unveils the FP2, a compact full-frame hybrid camera with advanced imaging and videography features, competing with high-end models.
Sigma introduces new pocket camera
Sigma has launched the FP2, a full-frame sensor hybrid pocket camera aimed at both photography and videography markets. The FP2 is the successor to the original FP model from 2019, which was recognized as the smallest 24x36mm body in the world.Enhanced sensor technology
The FP2 features a partially stacked 24.5 Mpx full-frame CMOS sensor, which improves performance by minimizing deformation from "rolling shutter" and allows for a burst rate of about 20 images per second. This sensor is comparable to those found in high-end cameras like the Nikon Z6 III and Lumix S1 II.Flexible display and accessories
The FP2 includes a 3.15-inch 2.1 Mpix touchscreen with a tilting screen that can be detached from the body, offering flexibility for different shooting angles. An optional electronic viewfinder, the EVF-21, is available as an accessory, featuring a 5.76 Mpix OLED panel that connects via a USB-C port and offers a tilting design.Advanced autofocus and subject detection
The camera includes an improved autofocus system with subject detection algorithms that now recognize birds in addition to humans, dogs, and cats. This enhancement allows for more accurate focusing in various shooting scenarios.Video capabilities and modes
In terms of video, the FP2 offers 6K OpenGate recording, which reads the entire sensor surface up to 59.94 i/s. However, the recording is limited to 29.97 i/s in Apple ProRes RAW. The camera includes a dedicated switch to toggle between STILL (photo) and CINE (video) modes, each with its own interface and workflow.Storage and battery improvements
The FP2 features 70 GB of internal memory, similar to the BF model, but includes an SD UHS-II memory card slot, which is located in the same compartment as the battery. The new BP-91 battery promises 30% more autonomy than the previous model, offering 370 photos or 130 minutes of video.Simplified color modes
Sigma has reduced the number of color rendering filters available on the FP2 compared to its predecessor, offering 13 instead of 16. The camera retains 10 color modes, including Standard, Warm Gold, Teal and Orange, Powder Blue, FOV Classic Blue, FOV Classic Yellow, Forest Green, Sunset Red, Cinema, and Monochrome.New color modes and pricing
Sigma has removed some modes such as Vivid, Neutral, Portrait, Landscape, Off, and Duotone, and added Rich, Calm, and 709 Look modes. A dedicated "Color" button allows quick switching between these modes without navigating through a software interface.Availability and pricing options
The Sigma FP2 will be available from November 11 in several versions: a bare body priced at 2199 euros, a body with the EVF-21 electronic viewfinder at 2799 euros, and a body with a 50mm F2 DG Contemporary lens in L mount at 2799 euros.
