Microsoft rolls out Cloud Rebuild, letting users reinstall Windows 11 remotely even when the system won't start.
Microsoft releases Cloud Rebuild to public
Microsoft has started making its Cloud Rebuild feature available to the general public after several months of testing. This feature allows users to reinstall Windows 11 from the Internet, even if the system fails to start.New features added to Cloud Rebuild
The feature was first introduced in July and has since received additional functions, including a secure data deletion option and the ability for IT administrators to trigger a remote reinstallation. These new features are available with the optional update KB5127936, published on October 28 for versions 25H2 and 26H2.How Cloud Rebuild works
Cloud Rebuild allows users to reinstall Windows 11 by downloading directly from Windows Update a system image and the necessary drivers for the computer. The operation takes place in the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), accessible after several startup failures.Accessing Cloud Rebuild
Users no longer need to prepare a USB key on another PC or have a local recovery image. They can also launch this feature when Windows is still operational, from Settings > System > Recovery.Improved Internet connection in WinRE
Microsoft is using this deployment to improve the Internet connection from WinRE. The recovery environment can now automatically reuse certain Wi-Fi profiles already registered in Windows, including professional networks that are compatible.Limitations and requirements
This is a welcome new feature for repair tools that need to access Microsoft servers, without requiring the user to reconfigure their connection. However, it will be necessary that WinRE functions correctly and has compatible network drivers.Cloud Rebuild is not a standard repair
It is important to note that Cloud Rebuild is not a standard repair. The procedure reformats the system disk and deletes local files, accounts, applications, and settings. Two options are available: a standard deletion or a secure deletion based on the capabilities of the storage hardware.Data backup and update availability
The data already backed up in OneDrive is not affected. Since the KB5127936 update is optional, there is no obligation to install it immediately. Users can also retrieve these changes with the Patch Tuesday on November 10.
