Trade growth in Côte d'Ivoire

Côte d'Ivoire's foreign trade has grown significantly in recent years, driven by increased agricultural exports, hydrocarbon production, and higher imports tied to investments. According to a recent report from Afreximbank, the total value of merchandise trade rose from 26 billion dollars in 2018 to 57 billion dollars in 2025.

Export sectors driving the economy

The growth is largely attributed to key export sectors such as cocoa, cashew nuts, natural rubber, gold, and hydrocarbons. The rise in oil production, particularly with the development of the Baleine field, and the discovery of condensates on the Calao block in February 2026, are expected to further expand this export base in the coming years.

Imports rising with infrastructure projects

Alongside the increase in exports, Côte d'Ivoire has seen a significant rise in imports, especially due to large infrastructure projects. In 2025, chemicals, industrial products, and fuels were the top import category, valued at 6.7 billion dollars. China and Nigeria were the main import partners for the country that year.

Agricultural exports remain dominant

Despite efforts to diversify its economy, agricultural products continue to dominate Côte d'Ivoire's exports. In 2025, food and agricultural products were the leading export category, valued at 14.4 billion dollars. Switzerland and the Netherlands were the main destinations for these exports. African markets accounted for about 22% of the country's total merchandise trade, with Nigeria being the largest African source of imports.

Trade reforms and future projections

Côte d'Ivoire has introduced several reforms to streamline trade, including customs system interconnections with Ghana, a single window for foreign trade, and digital procedures. These measures aim to reduce delays and costs for businesses. However, the report predicts a slight decline in trade in 2026, with the total value of merchandise trade expected to reach 56.3 billion dollars before rising to 58.7 billion dollars in 2027.
