A Salmonella outbreak linked to broccoli sprouts has led to 32 confirmed cases across six U.S. states, with an additional 10 cases recently reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Salmonella is a type of bacteria that can cause foodborne illness, often leading to symptoms like fever, diarrhea, and vomiting. The majority of the cases—24 in total—are in Washington, with four in Montana and confirmed illnesses also in Oregon, Minnesota, Idaho, and Utah. Three people have been hospitalized, two of whom are in Washington, but no deaths have been reported.
The outbreak has been traced back to broccoli sprouts produced by Evergreen Fresh Sprouts LLC, a company based in Idaho. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has confirmed that the sprouts are under recall and were sold to restaurants, grocery stores, co-ops, and food service providers in Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Utah. The FDA also noted that the sprouts may have been shipped to other states as well, though specific details on those locations are not yet available.
The recalled broccoli sprouts were sold in plastic bags or clamshell containers with expiration dates ranging from September 7 to September 16. Consumers are being urged to throw away or return any affected products and to clean any surfaces or items that may have come into contact with the sprouts using hot, soapy water or a dishwasher. Anyone who believes they may have consumed the sprouts and are experiencing symptoms such as a fever over 102 degrees Fahrenheit, bloody diarrhea, vomiting, or signs of dehydration should seek medical attention immediately.
The CDC has warned that the actual number of cases could be higher than reported, as many people recover without seeking medical care and are not tested for Salmonella. It can also take several weeks for illnesses to be officially linked to an outbreak. The first cases were reported in July, with illnesses continuing through September 3. Evergreen Fresh Sprouts could not be reached for comment on the recall or the outbreak.
