A 1990 military truck transformed into an 11-meter expedition camper by Plan B Trucks, featuring a self-contained living space and extreme off-road capabilities.
Military truck turned expedition camper
A military vehicle originally built for the U.S. Army in 1990, the BMY M931A2 6x6 was transformed into a massive expedition camper by Plan B Trucks in Utah in 2017. Designed for extreme off-road travel, this converted truck now features an autonomous living space that resembles a house on wheels.Design for extreme overlanding
This 11-meter-long vehicle still retains the rugged appearance of a military truck, with features like a red and black bedliner, steel bumper, and a large electric winch. However, behind the driver’s cab, the original trailer has been replaced by an 8.2-meter living compartment, turning the truck into a mobile home built for remote adventures.Origins of the military truck
The BMY M931A2 was originally assembled in Ohio by Bowen-McLaughlin-York, a division of Harsco Corporation. It was part of the M939 family of tactical trucks, designed to carry heavy loads off-road and tow semi-trailers. The A2 version, produced between 1989 and 1992, included improvements for reliability and performance.Engine and mechanical specifications
The truck’s engine is an 8.3-liter inline-six Cummins, producing 240 horsepower and 745 lb-ft of torque. Power is transmitted through a five-speed Allison automatic transmission and a two-range Rockwell transfer case. The vehicle can drive on either the rear axle or all six wheels, with heavy Rockwell axles and air brakes ensuring durability in harsh conditions.Interior living space
Inside the 8.2-meter living compartment, the military aesthetic is replaced with warm, home-like features. Wooden walls and floors create a cozy atmosphere, while the space includes a living area with a sofa and swivel TV, a kitchen with stainless steel appliances, and sleeping areas with a queen bed, fold-out bed, and convertible sofa. A bathroom with a shower and dry area completes the setup.Autonomy and off-grid capabilities
The camper is equipped for long trips without relying on external power or water. It has two fresh water tanks totaling 946 liters, a 170-liter gray water tank, and two diesel tanks for the Cummins engine. The roof has nine solar panels, lithium batteries, and an Xantrex inverter for off-grid use.Exposure and auction details
The expedition truck was featured in the 2017 show Extreme RVs and has about 22,000 miles on its odometer. Recently listed for auction on Bring a Trailer, it received a bid of $30,750, but the reserve price was not met, and the truck remains unsold.
