Militarized truck turned camping van

An old 6x6 military BMY M931A2 truck from 1990 has been transformed into a giant camping van by Plan B Trucks. Powered by an 8.3 L diesel engine and nine solar panels, this vehicle can carry 950 liters of water but has a drawback that has not been specified.

Design and military origins

The truck, which resembles a military convoy lost in hostile terrain, is an old US Army vehicle that has been converted into a giant camping van. The base is a BMY M931A2 from 1990, a military tractor from the M939 family, originally designed to move heavy loads off-road.

Converted camper's unique approach

The world of converted campers often plays on extremes, from minimalist mini-vans to school buses transformed into rolling lofts. This truck goes even further, with a habitable cell placed on a 6x6 chassis designed to withstand years of service. The stated objective is to offer a combination of comfort, adventure, and autonomy sufficient to go for several weeks, or even to imagine surviving an end-of-the-world scenario.

Engine and mechanical specifications

At the base of the project is a military truck 6x6 BMY M931A2, a 5-ton vehicle from the M939 family used by the US Army to tow and transport heavy loads. The chassis receives a six-cylinder in-line Cummins turbo-diesel engine, with a displacement of 8.3 liters, giving this configuration about 243 horsepower and more than 1,000 Nm of torque.

Conversion and exterior details

The transformation into a camping van was carried out in 2017 by the company Plan B Trucks, based in Utah. The preparers installed behind the cab a large habitable cell of about 8.2 meters, for a total length close to 11 meters, before repainting the entire unit in a very eye-catching red and black combination.

Interior features and comfort

The habitable cell has been completely redesigned for civilian use, with an interior height of more than two meters allowing to stand up easily. The walls are clad with wood-effect panels, the lighting is done through LEDs, and the numerous cabinets offer space to store clothes and equipment.

Water and energy systems

In terms of autonomy, this military camping van has two clean water tanks for a total capacity of about 950 liters of water, enough to consider long expeditions far from service areas. Grey and black water are stored in two other tanks of about 170 liters each, to limit technical stops.

Power and fuel efficiency

The roof accommodates nine solar panels that power a 140 Ah lithium battery via charge regulators and an inverter, the whole set coming to complete a cooling and heating system to maintain good comfort on board. The truck also retains its two large diesel tanks of about 284 liters each, for a total of about 570 liters, with a consumption that is around 40 l/100 km according to military data.

Market interest and current status

Listed on the Bring a Trailer platform, the vehicle reached a maximum bid of 29,000 euros, but the reserve price was not met and the truck finally did not change hands, waiting for someone to be ready to take the wheel of such a size.
