Vehicle specifications and features

R Truck-France's Kodiak 6x6 is an 11-meter-long expedition vehicle built on a Renault Trucks K series chassis. It includes a Miele kitchen, a drying washing machine, and a Starlink internet connection, designed for long-term off-road use.

Power and off-road capabilities

After three years of development, the Toulouse-based manufacturer offers a chassis with a permanent all-wheel drive system and three driven axles. A 13-liter six-cylinder diesel engine, rated at 440 horsepower and 2,500 Nm of torque, is paired with a 12-speed automated transmission. The vehicle has a ground clearance of 515 mm and Michelin 365/85 R20 tires with a centralized inflation system. A 10-ton winch is installed at the rear.

Size and performance

The Kodiak is 11 meters long, 2.55 meters wide, and 3.99 meters high, with a gross weight of 26 tons. It produces about 17 horsepower per ton, which is typical for a heavy truck but not ideal for agility. The vehicle competes with other models like the Hunter Sherpa 6x6 and the Dämmler Torsus Praetorian in the niche market of large expedition vehicles.

Interior and living space

The body of the vehicle is 7.55 meters long, offering around 18 square meters of living space with a ceiling height of 2.05 meters. It features a counterframe to absorb torsion during off-road travel. The walls are 70 mm thick, the roof 90 mm, and the floor 115 mm, providing insulation for cold weather. Inside, there are four beds, a rear room with a 180 x 200 cm bed, and a through bathroom with a 90 x 80 cm shower and dry toilets that can last 15 to 20 days without emptying.

Kitchen and resources

The kitchen includes an induction cooktop from Siemens, a microwave-vapor oven from Miele, a large Liebherr refrigerator, a dishwasher, a Jura coffee machine, and a Thermomix. An 8 kg drying washing machine is also included. The vehicle has a 1,000-liter potable water tank and 450 liters of grey water. A multi-stage filtration system with UV-C treatment is used for fresh water. Six solar panels provide 3,000 W of peak power, supported by three lithium batteries and an 8,000 W inverter. A 6 kW diesel generator serves as a backup. The system is controlled via a Garmin interface with Starlink and a 4G/5G router for connectivity.

Fuel and autonomy

The vehicle includes two 315-liter fuel tanks, totaling 630 liters. With an average fuel consumption of 25 liters per 100 kilometers, the manufacturer claims an autonomy of up to 2,500 kilometers. The vehicle is available in three configurations: Essential starting at around 700,000 euros, Explorer at 900,000 euros, and Premium at 1.2 million euros. Custom configurations may increase the cost further. A more compact 4x4 model called the Grizzli is also available.

Remaining questions and practical challenges

The payload capacity is not specified, but the 1,000 liters of water and 630 liters of diesel already weigh over a ton and a half, not including occupants and luggage. The tare weight remains unspecified. Driving the vehicle requires a heavy truck license, and its size poses challenges in urban areas, parking, and access restrictions. The height of 3.99 meters leaves little clearance under structures and vegetation. The Kodiak is aimed at a very limited clientele seeking an expedition vehicle designed like a secondary residence.
