Volvo has unveiled a major visual and technological update for its XC40 and all-electric EX40 models for the 2028 model year. While both models will receive similar exterior and interior upgrades, the U.S. market will only see the updated XC40, as the electric EX40 will no longer be available in the country. The current XC40, first introduced in 2017, had a minor refresh in 2022, but the 2028 version brings more substantial changes, particularly to the front end. These updates include a redesigned bumper, headlights, and grille, giving the XC40 a more modern look. The EX40 will also receive the same exterior changes, making the two models visually similar, with the main difference being their badging and grille styles.
Both the XC40 and EX40 now feature an upgraded interior with a larger 11.2-inch touchscreen, replacing the previous 9-inch display. The new software includes integration with Google's Gemini AI, enabling features like finding nearby restaurants, summarizing their menu options, and suggesting scenic driving routes. The XC40’s interior has long been praised for its design, and the larger screen and improved ambient lighting continue to set it apart in its class.
Safety features have also been enhanced with the addition of high-resolution cameras, ultrasonic sensors, and updated radar systems. These improvements support features like a 3D view of the vehicle and an automated lane-change function within the Pilot Assist system. A new central safety controller with increased processing power and the ability to receive over-the-air updates manages these systems. However, Volvo has stated it will not offer hands-off driver assistance systems similar to those found in vehicles from BMW or Tesla.
The updated EX40 will continue to be sold in international markets, but it will not be available in the U.S., where the XC40 will be offered in the B5 trim. This version includes a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and a small electric motor to improve fuel efficiency. The all-electric EX40 is no longer available in the U.S. The 2028 XC40 is expected to arrive at dealerships early next year, with final pricing details to be released closer to its launch.
