Volvo has announced the return of its plug-in hybrid XC40 after a three-year absence, featuring a significant redesign. The new XC40 PHEV is expected to reach dealerships in early 2025. It includes updated exterior styling, a redesigned interior with Google’s Gemini AI assistant, a larger infotainment screen, and a new safety system with advanced sensors and software. The mild hybrid version of the XC40 is still available in the U.S. and other markets, alongside the fully electric EX40.
The XC40 PHEV targets customers who want better fuel efficiency but are not yet ready to switch to fully electric vehicles. Volvo has adjusted its earlier plan to sell only electric vehicles by 2030, though the company hasn’t shared specific details about the new XC40’s powertrain, engine, motor, range, or battery capacity.
Exterior changes include new "Thor’s Hammer" LED headlights, an updated front grille, bumper, hood, and front wings. The rear also gets new lighting, a redesigned bumper, and an upgraded tailgate. Three diamond-cut wheel options will be available in 18-, 19-, and 20-inch sizes.
Inside the car, a larger 11.2-inch infotainment screen with higher resolution and a new user interface is included. Google’s Gemini AI assistant will help with route planning, finding locations, and managing messages. Additional features include an improved wireless phone charger and smart storage solutions.
Safety features have been significantly upgraded with a new sensor and software system that helps avoid collisions in real time, steers the car automatically in emergencies, and applies brakes if needed. The system includes new front and corner radars, a front camera, rear corner radars, 12 new ultrasonic sensors, and parking cameras. New safety features include alerts for cyclists when opening doors, lane change assistance, and smoother lane-keeping support. An optional 3D/360-degree camera is available for easier parking and low-speed maneuvering.
Akhil Krishnan, Interim Lead for the 30 and 40 Series at Volvo Cars, said the redesigned XC40 is the best version yet, combining improved design, technology, and safety. He added that the model is expected to remain one of Volvo’s top-selling vehicles for years to come.
