Volvo has introduced updated versions of its plug-in hybrid XC60 and XC90 SUVs, focusing on extended electric ranges and new features. The latest models come with larger batteries, offering the longest electric-only range among plug-in hybrids in the U.S. market, according to Volvo. The XC60 now has a 41.2 kWh battery (37.9 kWh usable), allowing for an estimated 78-mile electric range, while the XC90 has a slightly smaller usable capacity and a 73-mile range. These figures are based on testing by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and if confirmed, they would mark a significant leap in electric range for plug-in hybrids.
In addition to the improved battery, both models have undergone a redesign to match Volvo’s new design language. This includes an updated front grille, redesigned bumper, hood, and front wings, along with new wheel styles and LED headlights with a signature "Thor’s Hammer" light pattern. The XC60 also features a new sensor system, including an additional radar sensor, upgraded cameras for 360-degree visibility, and a more powerful processor that enables advanced safety features like lane-change assist, Automatic Emergency Steering and Braking, and a cyclist alert when opening doors.
Inside the XC60, a new 11.2-inch vertical display replaces the previous infotainment system, now powered by Google’s Gemini chatbot as the voice assistant. The XC60 retains physical controls such as a volume knob for ease of use. The XC90 also receives similar interior upgrades, including the new display and Gemini integration. The XC60’s exterior has been redesigned with new active-matrix LED headlights that can dim specific sections to avoid blinding other drivers, while the rear features a revised liftgate, bumper, and LED taillights. The XC90 has more subtle changes, with only a new badge indicating its enhanced plug-in hybrid capabilities.
Volvo aims to increase sales of its hybrid models to support the development of its upcoming all-electric vehicles, such as the EX50, EX60, and a new, more affordable model set to replace the EX30. Production of the updated XC60 and XC90 is scheduled to begin in late Fall 2026, with customer deliveries expected to start in early 2027.
