Honda's 2027 Civic e:HEV adds a virtual 8-speed transmission for a sportier drive, keeping its hybrid tech and design unchanged.
New hybrid Civic gets virtual transmission
The 2027 Honda Civic e:HEV introduces the S+ Shift system, an 8-speed virtual automatic transmission that mimics gear changes without actual mechanical gears. This update is part of a mid-cycle refresh focused on technology and interior design, while keeping the car's exterior and hybrid powertrain unchanged. The model is already available in Spain.S+ Shift comes from a previous Honda model
The S+ Shift system was first introduced in the Honda Prelude and is now a key feature of the Civic. It allows drivers to select from eight pre-programmed "gears" using steering wheel paddles on the Sport and Advance trims. The entry-level Elegance trim continues with traditional hybrid operation. The system simulates gear changes by adjusting engine speed and electric motor effort, with sound effects added via an Active Sound Control system, especially on the Civic Sport with its 12-speaker Bose audio system.System enhances driving feel without changing mechanics
The S+ Shift system aims to make the hybrid Civic feel more dynamic without altering its mechanical components. In Normal or Econ mode, the car continues to operate smoothly and efficiently. When S+ mode is activated, acceleration occurs in stepped intervals, similar to a traditional automatic transmission. The system uses the position of the accelerator and brake, speed, slope, and battery state to determine the best virtual gear. Paddles allow drivers to manually shift up or down, giving a sense of control.Civic uses sound and torque for simulated shifts
During deceleration or before a turn, the Civic can simulate a downshift with enhanced engine braking and a change in engine speed. This is done by the traction electric motor modulating torque and software managing engine speed and sound in the cabin. This approach mirrors similar techniques used in models like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N and the Porsche Taycan, which also use artificial sounds and simulated gear shifts to create an emotional driving experience.Civic's performance and efficiency remain the same
The technical specifications of the Civic e:HEV remain unchanged, with 184 hp and 315 Nm of combined torque. Fuel consumption and emissions stay consistent, averaging around 4.7 to 5.0 liters per 100 km and 108 to 115 grams of CO₂ per kilometer. Honda has not raised the prices of the Civic e:HEV despite the new features.New design elements added to Sport trim
The Sport trim of the Civic e:HEV receives a black glossy shark fin roof antenna, red accents in the grille inspired by the defunct Type R model, and red stitching on the seats, steering wheel, center armrest, and door panels. A surveillance camera in the A pillar feeds the driver attention assistant, meeting the European GSR2 standard. New color options include Meteorito Grey metallic, along with White Platino, Black Cristal, Blue Marino, and Red Cristal Premium. The car also features a new black and silver Honda logo.
