Nicole Kidman, the acclaimed Australian actress, has opened up about the emotional complexity of winning the 2003 Academy Award for Best Actress. She shared her thoughts on the Therapuss podcast, describing how she felt "beyond lonely" on the night she won the Oscar for her role as Virginia Woolf in The Hours. Despite achieving one of the highest honors in her field, Kidman reflected on the deep sense of isolation she experienced, longing for the presence of loved ones. At the time, she was still recovering from her high-profile divorce from actor Tom Cruise in 2001 and was single. She expressed a strong desire to share the moment with family and a partner, saying, "I wish... I had my mom with me and my dad, but I was like, 'Where's my partner, someone that I can share this with?'" The Oscar win became a pivotal moment for Kidman, prompting her to reevaluate her personal and professional life. She described the experience as "one of the most profound" of her life, realizing that while the award was a significant achievement, it also highlighted her need for a more balanced life. "I realized I needed to 'get a life,' " she said, acknowledging the emotional weight of holding such a prestigious honor while feeling emotionally distant from the celebration. In her 2024 book 50 Oscar Nights, Kidman reflected further on that night, explaining that she had no interest in celebrating with a party and initially considered skipping the Vanity Fair after-party. Despite ultimately attending, she described the experience as overwhelming, walking in "completely overwhelmed, emotional, shaking," and feeling "almost apologetic" for being there. This moment, she said, underscored the emotional complexity of her success. Kidman later found love again, marrying country singer Keith Urban in 2006, though the couple divorced in 2023. Today, she is focused on her current project, starring in Practical Magic 2, the long-awaited sequel to the 1998 film Practical Magic, in which she originally played one of the lead roles.
