Refining margins surge for TotalEnergies

TotalEnergies reported a 146% increase in its refining margins for the third quarter of 2026, reaching $33.2 per barrel. This sharp rise is linked to global shortages of refined products, driven by conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as a 10% increase in processing volumes. The company's European refineries are operating at full capacity, with CEO Patrick Pouyanné describing them as "like gold mines."

Record-breaking performance in Q3 2026

The refining margin for the third quarter of 2026 rose from $13.5 per barrel in the second quarter of 2026, marking an unprecedented performance. TotalEnergies had already doubled its net profit on an annual basis to $5.4 billion in the second quarter of 2026, and the third quarter is expected to be even more promising. The company anticipates an increase of $2 billion in available cash flow in the refining-chemicals sector in the third quarter compared to the second, which could be used for new projects, shareholder payments, or strengthening the balance sheet.

Strategic advantage from geopolitical tensions

The geopolitical situation, including sanctions against Russia, has benefited European refiners less dependent on Russian crude, with TotalEnergies capitalizing on this strategic advantage. However, analysts remain cautious about the sustainability of these margins, noting that low global stocks offer little room for error in case of new disruptions. While global demand supports prices, prudence is advised for portfolios exposed to the energy sector.

Results to be released in late October

The full results will be published on October 29, 2026, with analysts expecting "exceptional" performance. Investors and industry observers will be closely watching the detailed report to assess whether the company's success is a temporary anomaly or a sign of a more lasting shift in the energy market.
