Organic meat demand grows in 2025

Organic meat consumption is increasing in 2025, with a 3.6% rise in value and a 2% increase in volume. This growth is driven by sectors like collective catering and specialized stores, which are seeing stronger demand for organic products.

Production capacity declines for organic livestock

Despite rising consumer demand, the organic cattle, veal, and sheep sectors are experiencing a fourth consecutive year of decline in production potential. The INTERBEV Organic Meat Observatory reports that the challenge now is not selling but producing enough to meet demand.

Slaughter numbers drop across organic meat sectors

In 2025, total organic meat slaughter reached 27,541 tonnes equivalent carcass, down 6% from 2024. This decline is linked to smaller herds, fewer farms, and a shift of animals to conventional farming, where prices are higher.

Veal sector suffers the most from production decline

The veal sector has seen the sharpest drop, with a 27% decline in slaughter numbers. Factors include retirements, farm conversions, disease outbreaks, and costly European regulations that require significant investment.

Marketing channels show mixed performance

Off-premise catering is the only growing segment, rising by 1.6% as a result of regulations requiring 20% organic content in collective meals. Large retail remains the biggest sales channel but has been losing ground since 2021.

Sector sets ambitious goals for 2030

The organic meat industry has set a goal to return to 2019 production levels by 2030. Strategies include mandatory contracts for farmers, better market visibility, and consumer campaigns like It's organic meat! to boost sales.
