Organic meat production declines

The organic meat industry in France faced a decline in production in 2025, with a 1.1% decrease in cultivated land and a 1.3% drop in the number of organic farms. This follows a period of market recovery in 2024, but challenges remain in maintaining supply levels.

Slaughterings fall in organic meat sector

Organic meat slaughterings dropped by 6% in 2025, from 29,294 tons of carcass equivalent (TEC) in 2024 to 27,541 TEC. This decline is attributed to the reallocation of animals to conventional markets, higher animal prices, reduced availability in large stores, and shifting consumer behavior.

Out-of-home dining shows growth

The out-of-home dining (RHD) segment is the only positive trend in the organic meat market, with a 1.6% increase in 2025. This segment accounts for 19% of the overall organic meat market, while other sales channels like artisan butcheries and large-scale retail have seen declines.

Dairy and breeding cattle numbers fall

Organic dairy cattle farms decreased by 8% in 2025, with a 5.9% drop in the number of dairy cows. Similarly, breeding cattle farms declined by 6%, with a 5.6% reduction in the number of cows. Overall, the number of organic cattle farms in France fell to 9,943 from 10,688 in 2024.

Prices rise despite lower volumes

Despite a 0.4% decline in organic meat sales volumes, turnover increased by 4.8% in 2025. This is largely due to inflation and a 6.5% rise in meat prices, which are linked to higher animal prices on the market.

Strategic plan aims to revive sector

To boost consumption and recover lost ground, the organic meat sector launched a communication campaign in 2025 to highlight the benefits of organic farming. A long-term strategy with a 2030 target focuses on six areas, including improving market visibility, strengthening supply chains, and revitalizing sales points across all distribution channels.
