Panasonic has introduced the Lumix S 20mm F2.5, a new compact lens tailored for its full-frame mirrorless cameras. Designed to be lightweight and portable, this lens joins Panasonic’s growing lineup of compact optics, following the release of the 40mm F2. It aims to meet the demand for lighter full-frame lenses that are ideal for travel and daily use, offering a balance between portability and performance. With a 20mm focal length, the lens provides an ultra-wide angle of view, making it perfect for capturing expansive landscapes, interior spaces, and dynamic street scenes. The f/2.5 aperture is not the widest available for this focal length, but it still allows for decent performance in low-light situations and offers some background blur. The lens features 11 elements arranged in 9 groups, including three aspherical lenses to minimize distortions. It can focus as close as 18 centimeters and uses standard 62 mm filters. The Lumix S 20mm F2.5 is compatible with all of Panasonic’s full-frame mirrorless models, including the compact Lumix S9 and the high-resolution Lumix S1R II. It is especially designed with videographers in mind, featuring elements that reduce focus breathing — a minor shift in framing that can occur when adjusting focus. This results in smoother transitions in video footage. The lens also includes a customizable Fn button and a control ring for greater user convenience. A firmware update for the Lumix S9, set to launch on October 13, will enable features like cropping zoom and add 4K recording at 60 frames per second. The lens is built to withstand dust, splashes, and cold temperatures down to -10 °C, with a fluorine coating on the front lens to make cleaning easier. However, it is not fully waterproof and is not intended for use in tropical environments. The added durability will be most beneficial for users of more rugged models like the Lumix S5. The Lumix S 20mm F2.5 will be available in black and silver for 499 euros, starting in October 2026. Panasonic’s choice to prioritize weight over maximum brightness reflects the design philosophy of its travel-focused camera bodies. This lens will compete with options like Sigma’s 20mm f/2, which is brighter but much heavier at 370 grams.
