A new solar power plant has been inaugurated under parking canopies in Bordeaux, marking a key step in the city's renewable energy expansion.
New solar plant in Bordeaux
Néomix, a subsidiary of Bordeaux Métropole Énergie, and GreenYellow have inaugurated on October 27 a solar power plant under the canopies of the 3 Cardinaux in Bordeaux-Bacalan. The project is part of a larger plan to install solar panels on several parking lots across the metropolitan area.Expansion of solar initiative
Following the commissioning of the Plaine des Sports Colette Besson solar plant in December 2025, the solarization program by Bordeaux Métropole and the City of Bordeaux has reached a new stage. This includes the installation of 22,000 m² of photovoltaic canopies on the parking lot of the 3 Cardinaux road center in Bordeaux-Bacalan.Design challenges for the site
The site, which is designated for heavy goods vehicle parking, presented a major technical challenge in the project's design. The photovoltaic canopies, installed by GreenYellow, had to be sized to accommodate the movement and parking of trucks while maximizing solar energy production on the available surface.Environmental and energy benefits
With an installed power of 3,648 kWc, the plant will generate 4,377 MWh of renewable electricity annually, directly fed into the electrical grid. Over the lifespan of the project, the plant is expected to prevent the emission of 2,439 tonnes of CO2.Future developments in the program
The solarization program continues with the construction of a photovoltaic power plant on the P+R Pyrénées parking lot in Villenave d'Ornon. This installation will have a power capacity of 300 kWc and produce approximately 400 MWh of renewable electricity per year, with commissioning scheduled for the summer of 2027.
