A high school student was injured in the face during a blockade at Balzac high school in Tours, in the Indre-et-Loire department, on Wednesday, September 30. Witnesses said the injury was caused by a police LBD, or defense ball launcher, which is a non-lethal device used to disperse crowds. The LBD fires rubber bullets or similar projectiles to deter individuals without causing fatal harm. The prefecture of Indre-et-Loire confirmed that body camera footage from the police officers involved in the incident will be analyzed to determine the exact cause of the injury. The prosecutor of the Republic of Tours, Catherine Sorita-Minard, stated that the individual sustained "injuries to the head" and that the case has been referred to the IGPN, the National Police Oversight Authority, for further investigation. Forensic examinations indicated that the eye injuries were "compatible with the impact of a defense bullet of type LBD." The prefecture is conducting verifications to determine whether the injury resulted from a LBD shot. This is being done using the statements from the involved police officers, images from their body cameras, and testimonies from people who were present at the scene. The young man was hospitalized at the CHU of Tours and is expected to be heard later in the investigation. The prefecture noted that the level of violence in Tours has been "fairly high intensity," with new arrests reported on Wednesday. On Tuesday, six people were arrested for violent acts involving the throwing of projectiles at law enforcement. Two of them will be summoned before the juvenile court in November. The ongoing situation has raised concerns about the escalation of tensions between students and authorities in the region.
