Lokaltog selects Stadler and Furrer+Frey for battery-powered trains to replace aging diesel units on a key line by 2031.
Lokaltog selects train supplier
Lokaltog, a regional railway company operating nine lines in Denmark, has chosen Stadler Deutschland to supply four battery-powered RS Zero multiple units. These trains will be built in partnership with Furrer+Frey, a Swiss firm specializing in railway electrification.Nærumbanen line to get new trains
The new trains are intended for the Nærumbanen line, which connects Jægersborg and Nærum. This 7.8 km route includes eight stations and serves around 775,000 passengers annually, with trains running every 10 minutes.Approval and timeline for new trains
The contract, expected to be signed early in 2027, requires approval from regional authorities. If approved, the RS Zero units are set to enter service by mid-2031, replacing older trains from 1999.Croatian manufacturer considered
Before finalizing the deal, Lokaltog had also considered Končar, a Croatian manufacturer. However, Stadler was ultimately selected for this project.Lokaltog’s broader electrification plan
As part of its strategy to phase out diesel-powered trains, Lokaltog has already ordered 24 Flirt Akku units from Stadler. These battery-powered trains are expected to be deployed on three of Lokaltog’s other lines between 2028 and 2029.
