Claude, an AI assistant developed by the company Anthropic, can now edit files from Google's suite of tools without requiring users to leave the current page. This update was announced by Anthropic on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Tuesday, October 6. The new feature allows Claude to function directly within Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. These files can now be opened and edited inside Claude, eliminating the need for users to constantly copy and paste between different tabs or applications.
Claude is installed as an add-on within Google's applications, appearing in a sidebar next to the document, spreadsheet, or presentation being worked on. Once activated, it reads the content and makes edits on the same page. By default, each change made by Claude requires user approval. However, there is also an option to automatically accept all changes, which uses the same advanced models available in the application, including the powerful Claude Opus 5.5.
The integration works both ways: from within Claude, users can paste a link to a Google file or request the creation of a new document, spreadsheet, or presentation. These files then open in a panel next to the conversation and can be edited simultaneously with the AI. Importantly, Claude operates under the user's existing Google sharing permissions and does not gain any additional rights beyond those already granted by the user's account.
This update follows previous integrations, such as when Anthropic connected Claude to Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Docs in April 2025, alongside the launch of its search tool, Research. At that time, the AI could only read data to help respond in the chat. More recently, in mid-September, Anthropic merged its classic chat interface with the Cowork space and launched its own tools, Claude Docs and Claude Slides. Now, Claude works directly within Google's applications, which already include their own AI assistant, Gemini, in a sidebar. Google also offers its own functions in Docs, such as the one triggered by typing "@."
The beta version of this integration is currently available to users on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans, but those using the free version of Claude do not have access. Anthropic has noted that some functions are still limited or not always reliable and has not provided a specific date for the final release of the feature.
