Siemens Mobility, a major provider of rail technology, has signed a contract with Railpool, a company that rents out railway equipment, to supply 100 Vectron X locomotives. The agreement was announced on September 23 at the InnoTrans trade fair in Berlin, a major event for the rail industry. The order includes 30 standard Vectron X locomotives and 50 dual-mode versions that can operate on both electric and diesel power. Railpool also has the option to purchase 20 more units. This deal will increase Railpool's total number of Vectron locomotives across all models to 325. For Siemens Mobility, this is the largest order to date for the new Vectron X model, which was launched in the middle of this year. Railpool will be the first customer to use the digital features of the Vectron X "Core" system, which includes advanced applications such as Remote Start, Vectron Eco Cruise, and Trainplay. These features are supported by an on-board computer that collects operational data, monitors the locomotive’s condition, and helps organize predictive maintenance, reducing the need for unexpected repairs. The Vectron X is designed for cross-border train travel and has been certified for use in 20 countries. It can reach speeds of up to 230 kilometers per hour in passenger service, making it suitable for high-speed rail networks. The locomotives are manufactured at Siemens Mobility's plant in Munich-Allach, which has been producing the original Vectron model since 2010. This facility has been central to the development and production of the Vectron series over the past decade. The first batch of Vectron X locomotives will be delivered to Railpool in 2027. This delivery schedule allows time for the integration of the new technology into Railpool's operations and for the training of staff. The deal underscores the growing demand for modern, efficient, and digitally integrated rail equipment, especially as rail networks expand and seek to improve sustainability and performance.
