Alstom, a major French industrial group, has received its first order for a new type of locomotive designed to move and sort freight wagons in marshalling yards. These specialized machines, known as shunting locomotives, will be produced at Alstom’s Belfort facility in eastern France. The initial part of the contract, signed with Northrail, a German rail equipment lessor, is valued at just under 100 million euros. The deal could grow to up to 700 million euros if all optional components are included.
The contract marks the commercial debut of Alstom’s Traxx Shunter, a new range of shunting locomotives intended for short-distance operations within freight yards, depots, and industrial sites. These locomotives are designed to replace aging diesel-powered equipment, which has long been the primary method for shunting in Europe. The first deliveries are expected by the end of 2029, with service in Germany anticipated to start soon after. The contract may involve up to 100 locomotives, though the exact number in the initial order has not been specified by the manufacturer.
These Traxx Shunters are versatile, capable of operating under overhead electrical lines and also using diesel on non-electrified tracks. This dual capability allows them to function not only in shunting roles but also on some major rail lines. The Belfort site, which has a long history with Alstom and was saved from closure a decade ago, will now expand its operations to include this new product line. The site is also known for producing TGV power cars, which are used in high-speed trains.
This order also strengthens Alstom’s relationship with Northrail, as the two companies previously signed a framework agreement in 2023 for 50 Traxx locomotives of a different model intended for use on major rail lines. Camille Brunel, an associate of the majority shareholder fund of Northrail, emphasized in a press release that shunting operations represent a key area where aging diesel traction is prevalent, and operators are in need of a reliable alternative to modernize their fleets.
