The latest PlayStation 5 system update, version 26.06-14.00.00, has changed the default setting for PS5 Pro owners by enabling "Enhance PSSR Image Quality" automatically. This newer upscaler, called "enhanced" or "upgraded" PSSR by Sony (not PSSR 2.0), is now activated for games that already support the original PSSR technology. However, the update does not add AI upscaling to all games on the PlayStation platform, and not every game with a "PS5 Pro Enhanced" badge uses PSSR in the first place. The enhanced PSSR was introduced in March and uses a different neural network and algorithm compared to the original version.
Enhanced PSSR is Sony's machine-learning upscaler specifically for PS5 Pro, allowing games to be rendered at a lower resolution and then upscaled to a higher output resolution. This helps developers achieve better visuals without the performance cost of rendering at higher resolutions natively. However, the initial version had some issues, like shimmering textures and distortion around fine text, which became noticeable once players noticed them. Sony claims the enhanced version improves fine detail clarity, image reconstruction, and motion stability. Developers have reported fewer flickering effects and better visual details like hair and foliage.
Games that support the newer version of PSSR will use it by default, but older games that weren’t built to support it will not be affected. If users experience unexpected visual effects, they can disable the override by going to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Enhance PSSR Image Quality. Additionally, they should ensure they are playing games in Pro or Quality mode to benefit from the improvements. Sony has not explained why it took about six months to enable this setting by default, nor has it claimed that every PSSR title will look better in all situations.
The update also includes new features for all PS5 owners, such as an on-screen voice chat indicator that shows the name of the person speaking, along with options to choose where this indicator appears. The Welcome Hub has also received a new Community Activity widget. The Trending Now feature displays 10 multiplayer games or modes that are currently popular, while the Top 10 feature lists the most popular games from the past week in the user’s region.
