Sony has introduced a new AI upscaling technology called QSSR (Quick Spectral Super Resolution) for the standard PS5 model, a feature that was previously only available on the more powerful PS5 Pro with its PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution). The QSSR was developed through a collaboration called "Project Amethyst" with AMD and is a simplified version of PSSR designed to work on the base PS5 without the need for a dedicated neural processing chip. Unlike PSSR, which uses specialized silicon with 300 TOPS of processing power and INT8 instructions, QSSR is built using FP16 calculations and a manually optimized neural network, making it more adaptable to the base PS5's hardware.
Currently, QSSR is available as an optional graphical setting in two games: Marvel's Wolverine, which launched on September 15, and Ghost of Yōtei, which became available in stores in October 2025. Sony has confirmed that the technology will be shared with all PlayStation studios, though each studio will need to integrate the QSSR library and make necessary adjustments to texture streaming for proper use. Daniel Craig, a principal graphics R&D engineer at Sony Interactive Entertainment, explained that QSSR replaces traditional upscaling methods like TAA (Temporal Anti-Aliasing) or FSR 3 (FidelityFX Super Resolution 3) with a more efficient solution.
Testing by Digital Foundry showed that QSSR requires between 1.5 and 1.8 milliseconds more per image than Insomniac’s in-house upscaler when upscaling from 864p to 1440p, leading to a reduction of 8 to 10 frames per second in unlocked frame rates. In 60 Hz performance mode, dynamic resolution helps maintain a stable 60 fps by reducing the number of calculated pixels. At 4K resolution, the cost increases to 4.4 milliseconds, which is more than double the 2 milliseconds required by PSSR on the PS5 Pro.
In Marvel's Wolverine, QSSR enhances the clarity and detail in environments such as the busy streets of Madripoor and the narrow alleys of Shinjuku. In Ghost of Yōtei, the technology improves the rendering of fine details in both characters and environments, providing a level of temporal stability previously unattainable on the base PS5. However, the PSSR on the PS5 Pro remains superior due to its higher internal resolution and more complex neural network.
Sony has emphasized that QSSR does not turn the base PS5 into a PS5 Pro but offers an improvement over traditional upscaling methods. As developers adopt the technology, it is expected to become more widely used. The PS5 Pro, priced at 900 euros, still offers the more advanced PSSR, while QSSR makes AI upscaling more accessible to a broader audience.
