Tesla has activated a new feature called Powershare Home Backup for its Model 3 and Model Y electric vehicles in the United States and Puerto Rico. This feature allows the vehicles to supply electricity to a home during a power outage, provided the home is equipped with a Powerwall 3, a battery system that stores energy. The feature is available for new Model 3 and Model Y vehicles ordered after October 1, 2026. Tesla claims that with a vehicle charged to 90%, this system can provide over two additional days of power to a household that uses 30 kWh of electricity per day.
However, the Powershare Home Backup feature is not currently available in Europe, and Tesla has not provided a timeline for when it might be introduced there. The Powerwall 3 has been sold in France since July 2025, but the feature that allows vehicles to power homes during outages remains delayed. Meanwhile, other automakers are exploring similar technologies. In France, Renault has already introduced a system called grid integration with its Renault 5 model. This includes a bidirectional charger and a service called Mobilize V2G, launched in 2024, which allows the vehicle to send electricity back to the home or even sell it to the power grid.
The Mobilize V2G service represents a broader trend in the automotive industry toward vehicles that can not only consume electricity but also contribute to the energy grid. This capability could help balance electricity demand and supply, especially during peak times. In contrast, Tesla has not yet offered a similar feature for its electric sedans and SUVs, even in the United States. This means that while Tesla vehicles can power homes during outages, they cannot currently send electricity back to the grid or be used to sell power to utility companies.
The differences in available features between Tesla and other manufacturers like Renault highlight the evolving landscape of electric vehicle technology. As more companies develop bidirectional charging systems, the role of electric vehicles in both personal and grid energy management is likely to expand. For now, Tesla’s Powershare Home Backup provides a valuable emergency power solution for its customers in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, but the company has yet to announce similar capabilities for European markets.
