In October, the Saint-André association Vivre mieux tout simplement has been raising awareness about breast cancer. Since October 1, the group has partnered with the CCAS of Saint-André and Run Odysséa to organize events focused on the fight against breast cancer. This is the third year the association has worked to highlight the issue and encourage women from Réunion to get screened for the disease. The efforts began with a workshop at the East Pharmacy in Saint-Benoît, where women learned how to perform self-palpation to detect any abnormalities in their breasts. Carole Illan, co-founder of the association with her sister Yollaine Illan, was diagnosed with breast cancer at stage 2 after discovering a lump through self-palpation. This experience reinforced the importance of early detection. Carole was inspired to start self-palpation after her sister, Yollaine, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Together, the sisters created the association to raise awareness among women about the risks of cancer and the importance of regular check-ups. On October 3, volunteers from the association set up at the Plaine-des-Palmistes during the 5 km race Les Hauts en rose to provide information about the self-palpation workshop. One emotional moment involved a woman who approached them, sharing that her sister was undergoing breast cancer treatment and that she struggled to say the word "cancer." The association aims to support people in such situations by offering contact and assistance. In addition, the group is working on a project to create a fashion show for its members, with twenty-five women designing models with the help of a seamstress from the association. The goal is to show that even after a health challenge, one can feel beautiful through clothing. The fashion show is scheduled for October 24 at the Colosse Park in Saint-André, alongside a health village featuring well-being and sports workshops. A total of 18 events are planned for the month of October. The association has partnered with the brand KEL’M LINGERIE for a charitable sales campaign, where one euro is donated to the association for each pink item purchased. On October 10, the association will initiate a solidarity chain with blood donation and the Rotary Club of Saint-André in the Cambuston neighborhood, at the French Blood Establishment - Reunion / Indian Ocean. The association's full program for the month of October can be followed on its Facebook page.
