BYD, a leading Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, is increasing its presence in France by making its electric models eligible for the CEE grant, a financial aid program designed to support the purchase of electric vehicles. The CEE grant provides 365 euros for individual buyers and 555 euros for professionals. This initiative is part of a partnership between BYD and EDF, a major French electricity provider, aimed at making BYD's electric cars more affordable. Unlike the ecological bonus, which is a larger financial incentive, the CEE grant does not require the vehicle to meet a specific environmental score. As a result, even electric vehicles produced in China can qualify for the CEE grant. However, this aid is significantly smaller than the ecological bonus, which can reach up to 6,000 euros depending on the buyer's income and other factors. For consumers, this distinction is important, as the CEE grant is much less valuable compared to the ecological bonus available for European-made electric cars. BYD is also working to make some of its models eligible for the ecological bonus. This will be possible once the company's plant in Hungary is fully operational, allowing models like the BYD Dolphin Surf and Atto 2 to meet the necessary environmental criteria. However, the commercial launch of these models is delayed, despite pilot production beginning earlier this year. This means that buyers may need to wait before they can benefit from the more substantial ecological bonus. In addition to the CEE grant, BYD is offering special promotions known as "customer benefits" to reduce the purchase price of its models. These promotions, however, are only valid for vehicles ordered between September 1 and September 30, 2026, from participating dealers. For example, the Dolphin Surf, which starts at 19,990 euros in the catalog, is reduced to 18,525 euros with a 1,100 euro customer benefit, plus the CEE grant. Higher trim levels, like the Boost version, offer even greater discounts, up to 3,600 euros. Similarly, the Atto 2 sees a 4,500 euro discount, and the Dolphin is eligible for up to 8,000 euros in savings. These discounts, combined with the CEE grant, make several BYD models more competitive in the French market. Dorothée Bonassies, general manager of BYD France, highlighted the brand's strong growth in the country, with 19,270 vehicles registered since the beginning of the year, representing a 133% increase compared to the same period last year. The company's market share has also grown significantly, from 0.8% to 1.7%, with a peak of 2.3% in August. While the current discounts are attractive, potential buyers should consider that some models, like the Dolphin Surf and Atto 2, may qualify for the ecological bonus in the future if production in Hungary progresses as planned. Waiting a bit longer could result in even greater savings, especially if these models become eligible for the more generous ecological bonus.
