GameStop, an American video game retail chain, raised the price of used PS5 Pro consoles on its website to $1,399.99 on Tuesday, October 6, as reported by IGN. This is significantly higher than the $899.99 price tag for a new PS5 Pro sold directly by Sony in the United States. As a result, a used console now costs $500 more than a new one. This price increase is not unique to GameStop, as third-party sellers on platforms like Amazon, Best Buy, and Walmart are also listing similar prices for used PS5 Pro units. According to Dexerto, an internal memo from GameStop was leaked on Reddit on Monday, revealing that the company intentionally set the price for used consoles at $1,399.99 for the base model and $1,499.99 for the version with a disc drive. The memo also informed employees that selling used consoles for more than new ones was a deliberate strategy. Former employees have explained that GameStop offers much lower gift cards in exchange for used consoles, which are then resold at a higher price than what the company pays for them. This pricing strategy appears to be influenced by the current supply and demand dynamics in the market. New PS5 Pro consoles are currently unavailable in the United States, while many gamers are eager to purchase one ahead of the release of GTA 6, scheduled for November 19. This high demand for consoles has created an opportunity for retailers to charge a premium for used units. In France, the PS5 Pro officially costs 899.99 euros, following a 100 euro increase on April 2. Consumers in the U.S. are advised to compare the price of a used PS5 Pro with this official rate before making a purchase, to ensure they are not paying more than what is considered standard in other regions.
