In a move aligned with the ChatGPT Work mode, which focuses on productivity tools, OpenAI is introducing a new layer of collaborative editing. The company is phasing out the "library" feature and replacing it with "pages" and "spaces." These new elements are designed to allow multiple users to work together on documents and projects. Pages function similarly to Word documents, while spaces serve as organizational hubs where users can group pages and possibly add other files. This shift is not just about changing names—it also involves new features that change how users interact with the platform. The new features are gradually being rolled out across different ChatGPT subscription tiers, including Pro, Business (formerly Team), and Enterprise. Collaborative editing is currently available on web and desktop versions of the application, but mobile users can only view pages at this time. OpenAI has also indicated that support for spreadsheets and slides will be added "soon," though no specific timeline has been given. OpenAI had already begun emphasizing productivity with the ChatGPT Work mode, which was launched in July for Business and Enterprise users. This mode works alongside other features like Chat and Codex to help users create finalized documents such as reports, presentations, and websites. These tools integrate with familiar office software like Excel and Google Workspace, allowing users to generate and edit content directly within those platforms. Before the introduction of pages and spaces, collaborative editing was available through the Canvas feature, which was used for over a year. However, this feature was discontinued in spring 2026. Canvas allowed users to highlight specific sections of text to guide the AI in making revisions or improvements. Now, with the new features, users have a more integrated and flexible way to collaborate on documents and projects. According to Gartner, the choice of an enterprise AI assistant depends largely on how well it integrates with existing office software. Despite this, ChatGPT Enterprise has already been deemed a "coherent" alternative to traditional productivity suites.
