French AI content creation widespread

According to a survey conducted in April 2026 by Preply and Censuswide, 59% of French people have already used artificial intelligence to write content on their behalf. This includes both professional and personal communications, with the highest usage among young adults aged 18-24.

AI use highest among young adults

The practice affects 83% of those aged 18-24, and more than half of young people have used AI for cover letters, with 53% of those aged 18-24 using it for this purpose. The survey does not specify how often or how much of the text was generated by AI.

AI helps with professional communication

Twenty-one percent of respondents have used AI to write emails or professional messages in their native language. This rises to 36% among those aged 18-24 and 32% among those aged 25-34, compared to only 7% among those aged 55 and over.

AI aids in foreign language communication

Fourteen percent of respondents declared having used AI to communicate in a foreign language, with the highest use among those aged 25-34 at 24%, followed by 18% among those aged 18-24 and 8% among those aged 55 and over.

AI used to enhance social interactions

Thirteen percent of French people surveyed have used AI to appear more intelligent or courteous in their interactions, with 18% of those aged 25-34 using it for this purpose. AI is also used in personal correspondence, with 8% of respondents declaring they have used it to write to their loved ones in their native language, and 9% in a foreign language.

Growing generative AI use in France

The Preply survey is part of a broader movement, with 48% of the French population aged 12 and over using generative AI in 2025, according to a February 2026 report by Arcep, Arcom, the General Council of the Economy, and the National Agency for Territorial Cohesion. Among users, 58% stated they used these tools to help them write or translate texts, and 34% used them daily.
