Shorter days increase road accident risks. Learn how cyclists and pedestrians can stay safe with proper lighting and gear.
Road safety improves with better lighting
When daylight arrives late in the morning and night falls early in the evening, the risk of road accidents increases for everyone, and particularly for vulnerable individuals such as pedestrians, cyclists, or scooter riders.Mandatory equipment for cyclists
For example, when riding a bicycle, it is mandatory to have a non-flashing white or yellow front position light and a red rear light. There must be reflective devices white in front and red in back, orange on the wheels and pedals, plus a fluorescent vest at night outside urban areas (recommended in town) and a helmet for children under 12 years old (also recommended for everyone).Additional safety measures
In addition to this, luminous arm bands and belt straps, danger indicators, and retro-reflective helmets are likely to further enhance safety.Free workshops for cyclists
To check whether your bicycle meets the standards and to receive prevention advice, four special workshops are organized on the main cycling routes in Tours as the approach to the change of time (winter time ensures night during the evening peak hour, with a danger peak). These moments are free of charge. One will be held starting this Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Place Anatole France, Thursday the 15th at the end of the File Bridge on the Quai Paul Bert side at the same time, Tuesday the 3rd of November from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Tours train station, and a week later in front of the Vinci Congress Center.
