In autumn, daylight hours shorten, and it becomes darker earlier in the evening. To help cyclists stay safe, the organization Accueil Vélo et Rando is taking part in a national campaign called Cyclists, shine!. Four free events will be held in Tours on October 13 and 15, and November 3 and 10, each running from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The campaign emphasizes that simply being able to see the road is not enough for cyclists; they also need to be visible to others. As daylight fades, good lighting and reflective gear help other road users spot cyclists sooner, understand their path, and anticipate their movements. It is important to regularly check and maintain cycling equipment, especially as winter approaches. At each event, volunteers from the Prévention Routière association will work alongside Accueil Vélo et Rando. On the two November dates, the Collectif Cycliste 37 will also be present. The events will include games, discussions, and practical advice, offering a friendly and hands-on way to learn about cycling safety, whether someone rides daily, occasionally, or is considering cycling again. Participants will also have the chance to review essential cycling equipment, such as lights, catadiopters (reflective devices), and reflective vests. During the four events, attendees can discover the best gear to use this winter. Beyond equipment, the campaign encourages cyclists to adopt good habits, such as checking their lights before heading out, wearing light-colored clothing when possible, signaling turns, and being aware of blind spots. While visibility is important, it should not replace attentiveness. Being seen gives everyone more time to react and helps create a safer shared road environment. The events will be held in four highly trafficked areas: on Tuesday, October 13, at Place Anatole-France; on Thursday, October 15, at the northern end of the Fil Bridge, Quai Paul-Bert; on Tuesday, November 3, at the steps of Tours train station, on the tram side; and on Tuesday, November 10, on Boulevard Heurteloup, near the Palais des Congrès. Each event will take place from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. These events are free and open to everyone. They offer a quick way for people to learn, test their knowledge, and leave with practical advice that is easy to apply. More information is available on the Accueil Vélo et Rando website.
