Porsche shifts 718 models to electric only

Porsche will offer its upcoming 718 Boxster and Cayman models only with electric motors, according to recent reports. The decision comes after the company's head, Michael Leiters, tested the electric version and changed his initial position on the project. Leiters confirmed that no gasoline version of the 718 models will be available.

Financial and performance factors drive decision

The shift to electric-only 718 models was influenced by Porsche’s financial situation and the performance of the electric version. Producing both electric and gasoline versions of the same car would have been costly, and sales of battery-powered vehicles have not met expectations. In 2025, Porsche's operating margin dropped to 1.1%, down from 14.1% in 2024.

Porsche not abandoning internal combustion engines entirely

Porsche is not transitioning its entire vehicle range to battery power. The Macan, a compact SUV, will return with a thermal engine in 2028, coexisting with the electric Macan. This model could also offer a plug-in hybrid option. The 718 models are an exception due to the high costs of maintaining both powertrain options.

Porsche plans cost-cutting and new collaborations

Porsche plans to reduce its workforce by nearly 9,000 jobs over several years and cut management positions. The company also aims to lower development costs by sharing components and technologies with Audi. This strategy will maintain Porsche’s unique model characteristics while reducing expenses.

New concept car highlights future direction

Porsche unveiled the Mission S concept car on October 15, 2026, which features a central engine positioned above the 911. While details on power, price, and launch date are not yet available, Leiters said the design could support a thermal engine, conventional hybrid, or plug-in hybrid system. A fully electric version is not planned at this stage.
