Huawei has unveiled a specialized lens for its high-end Mate 90 Pro Max smartphone, aimed at improving the device's photography, especially for long-distance shots. This new lens is part of a broader trend among Chinese smartphone makers to add extra lenses to boost image quality. The idea was first introduced by the company Vivo, but Huawei has now adopted it with the Ruiying Z10, an external lens that connects to the Mate 90 Pro Max. The Ruiying Z10 features a 1-inch RYYB sensor with a 50-megapixel resolution, which is currently the highest found in any smartphone sensor, regardless of brand. The Ruiying Z10 provides a true zoom range that covers a focal length from 24 to 240 mm, with an adjustable aperture range from f/2.0 to f/4.5. The lens operates mostly on its own, with the smartphone acting mainly as a power source, data processor, and user interface. It attaches directly to compatible devices, making it a portable option for users seeking enhanced photography capabilities. However, the lens has some notable downsides. It weighs 346 grams, which is relatively heavy for a phone accessory, and it costs 5,999 yuan (about 895 dollars), making it a high-end product. The Ruiying Z10 is not universally compatible with all versions of the Mate 90 Pro Max. Huawei has confirmed that it only works with the collector editions of the Mate 90 Pro Max and its RS variant. These are the only models in the Mate 90 series that have a screw mount system around the camera module, allowing the lens to attach securely. This limited compatibility means that only a specific group of users can take advantage of the Z10's advanced features. The introduction of the Ruiying Z10 reflects the ongoing competition among smartphone manufacturers to push the boundaries of mobile photography. While the lens offers impressive technical specifications, its weight, cost, and limited compatibility may make it more of a niche product than a mainstream accessory.
