Avinox M2S motor adoption

The Chinese motor manufacturer DJI, known for its drone technology, has developed the Avinox M2S, an electric motor gaining popularity in all-road and all-terrain electric bicycles. This motor is now central to several brands, including Amflow and Canyon, which recently launched its first electric mountain bike with this technology.

Canyon's new electric mountain bike

Canyon unveiled the Spectral:ON 2027 on October 13, marking its first electric mountain bike equipped with the Avinox M2S motor. This model is the successor to the previous Spectral:ON and is described as the flagship trail bike in Canyon’s range, retaining a carbon frame but with several key improvements.

Design and technical upgrades

The new Spectral:ON features a redesigned carbon frame with a rigid front triangle for better steering and a flexible rear triangle to absorb trail vibrations. The cable routing has been improved to allow brake hose changes without removing the battery or motor. The bike also supports a mulet setup with 29-inch front and 27.5-inch rear wheels, or two 29-inch wheels using a flip chip.

Performance improvements

The Avinox M2S motor provides a significant boost in torque and power, reaching 150 Nm and 1500 W compared to the previous 85 Nm and 600 W. The bike also includes a touchscreen on the top tube and connectivity via the Avinox Ride app for detailed trip data and advanced settings.

Battery changes and charging

The battery capacity has decreased to 700 Wh from 800 Wh and is now fixed in the diagonal tube. While it can be removed, this requires disconnecting the motor and wiring. Canyon estimates a charge time of 3 hours 54 minutes with the included charger, compared to 1 hour 16 minutes with a faster 12 A charger sold separately.

Past battery issues and weight reduction

Canyon previously faced battery issues in 2024, prompting a recall of certain models. The new battery, supplied by Avinox, is lighter and improves the bike’s overall weight. The Spectral:ON now weighs 21.7 kg in size M, closer to lighter electric mountain bikes, thanks to the Avinox motor and carbon wheels.

New models and pricing

Canyon plans to release three additional models of the Spectral:ON between November 2026 and January 2027, including a lighter CF LTD version. The flagship CF 9 2027 model is priced at 6,999 euros, a 2,000 euro increase from the previous generation.

Technical specifications

The Canyon Spectral:ON CF 9 2027 features a carbon frame, Avinox M2S motor with 150 Nm torque and 1500 W power, a 700 Wh fixed battery, Fox 36 Factory fork, Fox Float X Factory shock, SRAM brakes, and a 12-speed X0 Eagle AXS transmission. It weighs 21.7 kg and has a maximum load capacity of 200 kg.
