A Texas man has been charged with murder after police found the remains of his 73-year-old mother inside a duffle bag. Arman Alexander Malik, 34, was arrested Monday by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office following the discovery. The sheriff, Ed Gonzalez, shared details on Facebook, stating that deputies were called to a home on September 1 after a welfare check was requested by Sorto De Malik’s daughter, who couldn’t reach her mother. The call came in around 10 p.m. local time, and when deputies arrived, they discovered the body of Dyna Guadalupe Sorto De Malik.
Inside the home, deputies found the remains wrapped in a bedsheet and rug, both covered in blood, inside a duffel bag. There was also a pool of blood on the carpet beneath the bag and blood splattered on a dresser, according to reports. Malik, who appeared to be under the influence of an unknown substance, was found at the home when police discovered his mother’s body. Detectives noted that he had dried blood under his fingernails and scratches on his hands. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation after being detained at the scene.
Detectives concluded that Malik had hidden his mother’s body to prevent law enforcement from finding it. Initially, he was charged with Tampering with Physical Evidence—Concealing a Human Corpse. However, after further investigation, he was booked into the Harris County Jail and charged with murder. Neighbors expressed shock at the incident, with one local resident, Shaun Ward, telling KTRK, “I cannot believe that happened right next door to me.” Reporter Jessica Willey asked Ward, “Who could do that to their mom?” to which he replied, “You gotta be outta your mind.”
Malik’s defense team has stated that he suffers from psychological issues and requires medical treatment. The case has drawn attention to the complex interplay between mental health and criminal behavior, as well as the challenges faced by law enforcement in such sensitive and tragic situations.
