Resumption of maritime protests in Mayotte

Maritime professionals in Mayotte have announced they will restart their protests on Monday, November 2, 2026, after failing to see commitments made in July fulfilled. The protests were initially suspended in June following agreements with local authorities to allow time for temporary infrastructure to be built.

Unmet commitments on infrastructure

The professionals had been promised the rapid installation of an emergency pontoon in Dzaoudzi, a critical port area, to replace infrastructure destroyed by cyclone Chido. However, this and other commitments have not been met, leaving the sector without secure working conditions.

Operational challenges due to lack of infrastructure

The absence of functioning pontoons has led to increased costs, insurance issues, and greater risks of theft and damage to ships. The Mayotte Tourism Cluster highlighted these problems in a recent statement, emphasizing the urgent need for temporary solutions.

Demands for action and accountability

Maritime professionals are calling for immediate action, including a secure temporary solution in Dzaoudzi and a clear timeline for the reconstruction of infrastructure in both Dzaoudzi and Mamoudzou. They also want improved security measures to protect their vessels from theft and damage.

Protest aims to push for concrete action

The Mayotte Tourism Cluster clarified that the resumption of protests is not meant to end dialogue with authorities but to ensure that previously made commitments are finally implemented. The failure to meet these promises has forced the sector to take this step.
