Mercedes-AMG considers reviving C 63 name

Mercedes-AMG is thinking about bringing back the C 63 sports car after the hybrid version received mixed reactions from customers. The current model, which uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with a rechargeable electric motor, was criticized for not matching the performance and feel of the previous V8 engine, even though it can produce up to 680 horsepower in its top configuration.

Hybrid C 63 will be replaced by a six-cylinder model

Mercedes-AMG has officially confirmed that the hybrid rechargeable four-cylinder engine in the C 63 will no longer be used. Instead, a new C 53 model with a 3.0-liter inline-six cylinder engine will take its place. However, the C 63 name might return in the future with a different engine type, though a V8 is not yet confirmed due to cost concerns.

AMG explores both thermal and electric powertrains

Jörg Burzer, technical director of Mercedes-Benz, mentioned that engineers are working on both traditional internal combustion engines and electric powertrains for future AMG models. The possibility of having two different C 63 models—one with a petrol engine and one electric—was not dismissed, showing the brand's openness to multiple options.

Electric C 63 could use existing battery platform

An electric version of the C 63 could potentially use the same battery platform as the current C-Class electric model. This platform provides up to 762 kilometers of range on a single charge and uses an 800-volt electric system. However, creating such a car would need careful handling of weight, battery cooling, and precise driving dynamics to match the fun of the current models.

Competitors are also moving toward electric performance cars

BMW is preparing an electric version of its M3, and a new six-cylinder M3 is expected to launch in 2028. These developments suggest that Mercedes-AMG may look to similar approaches when designing its own electric performance cars, aiming to meet customer expectations for both power and driving enjoyment.
