Lizzo has expressed relief after a U.S. district judge dismissed the remaining claims in a lawsuit against her production company. The pop star, whose real name is Melissa Viviane Jefferson, shared her reaction on Instagram, stating she was "relieved" by the court's decision and reaffirmed her commitment to "continue to fight" every claim made against her and her company. The lawsuit was filed by Asha Daniels, Lizzo's former wardrobe assistant, who alleged she faced "degradation, forced physical labor, denial of medical care, sexual harassment, and racial harassment" during her brief employment with Big Grrrl Big Touring in 2023. In a recent ruling, District Judge Fernando L. Aenlle-Rocha dismissed the remaining claims against the company. Earlier in 2024, the judge had already ruled that Daniels could not sue Lizzo personally, but the production company remained a defendant. In his decision, Judge Aenlle-Rocha stated that Daniels did not provide sufficient evidence to show that the company had a general hostility toward women in the workplace or that employees were treated differently based on gender. He noted that while the alleged conduct was "inappropriate and unprofessional," it fell outside the scope of legal protections for workplace discrimination, as defined by the Supreme Court. The judge also addressed a specific claim by Daniels about being injured when a heavy clothes rack ran over her foot, stating that the injuries did not qualify as disabilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Following the ruling, Lizzo thanked her legal team and emphasized the importance of truth in her Instagram post. She vowed to continue defending her name and business against what she called "vicious claims." She also pledged to use her platform to spread "positivity and light to the world." The lawsuit filed by Daniels followed another case involving three of Lizzo's former tour dancers, who also alleged sexual harassment. Those claims were denied by Lizzo's team, and allegations of fat-shaming from that case were dismissed by a judge in 2025. BBC Newsbeat has reached out to both Lizzo's and Daniels' legal representatives for further comment.
