Sambo demonstrations in Togo

On the beach of Lomé, demonstrations and competitions of sambo, a combat sport originating in the Soviet Union, are taking place as part of efforts to promote the discipline in Togo.

Togolese practitioner’s journey

Anthony Yao Sodjinê, a Togolese practitioner, has participated in four African competitions over three years of practice. A former judoka, he chose to practice sambo to test himself against another form of combat.

Promotion efforts in Lomé

Since June 2024, the Togolese Sambo Federation has regularly organized demonstrations along the coast of Lomé. The first edition of the Africa Initiative Cup is part of this effort to promote sambo, which remains little known to the general public.

Training opportunities in Russia

Practitioners hope to benefit from training and internships in Russia to strengthen their level and develop the sport nationally. "This initiative can allow us to obtain scholarships to go to Russia, in order to follow training aimed at athletes, coaches, and all practitioners," says Anthony Yao Sodjinê.

Togo-Russia sports agreement

In April 2023, Togo and Russia signed a protocol agreement, notably on school sports, infrastructure, and training. "Our mission here is to develop this type of sport in Togo, within the framework of cultural and sports exchanges, as well as training exchanges," explains a representative of Africa Initiative.

Sambo’s growing presence in Africa

Still discreet on the African sports scene, sambo is now trying to attract new enthusiasts in Togo and establish itself among combat disciplines practiced in the country.
