October Rose, an annual campaign in France focused on breast cancer awareness and prevention, will be celebrated in October at the CHU of Nîmes and the Institute of Cancerology of the Gard (ICG). The event includes a range of activities such as meetings with patient associations, prevention workshops, exchanges with healthcare professionals, photographic exhibitions, and dance performances. Each year, 59,000 women in France are diagnosed with breast cancer, and early detection significantly improves survival rates—9 out of 10 women survive if the disease is caught early. According to Santé publique France, the national participation rate in organized breast cancer screening programs reached 47.5% in 2025. At the ICG, the Espace de Rencontres et d'Information (ERI) provides a space for patients and their families to receive information, support, and guidance. During October Rose, various partner associations will take turns throughout the month to inform patients about their services and raise awareness of available resources before, during, and after treatment. Participating organizations include Œuvrons contre le cancer, Les Roses du Gard, Belle & Rose, the League against Cancer, Les Arènes d'Elles, Le Fil Rose, Vivre comme avant, Ô fil de ma bulle, and Patients en réseau. A specific meeting on breast reconstruction after breast cancer will be held on Thursday, October 8, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the ICG. Dr. Fanny Béchard, a gynecologist at the CHU of Nîmes, will lead the session, providing an opportunity for participants to discuss related topics and share experiences during this phase of recovery. The Maison des femmes du Gard will also play a key role in this year's October Rose events. On October 12 and 20, two "Women's Health" days will be held at the Carémeau site, open to the public. Midwives and midwifery students will offer advice on women's health and demonstrate self-examination techniques using simulators. Free consultations with a gynecologist and a midwife will also be available, including for gynecological exams and cervical cancer screenings. The October Rose program also features artistic events aimed at raising awareness and providing emotional support. Two photographic exhibitions will be displayed from October 1 to October 30 at the ICG and Carémeau. Un Octobre, pas toujours Rose, by photographer Diane Volle, presents portraits of women sharing their experiences with illness, and is shown at the ICG and Carémeau in partnership with Belle & Rose. Through Water, by Ingrid Meucci and Sophie Toesca—a former cancer patient—features large-format photographs and a short film exploring themes of illness acceptance, post-cancer life, and the role of caregivers. This project was a finalist in the Pink Ribbon Awards 2024 and is presented at the ICG with the Skin association. Additionally, dance workshops will bring together cancer patients and professional dancers on Wednesday, October 14, at 10 a.m. in the ICG hall. Through these events, the CHU of Nîmes emphasizes the importance of screening and prevention, while recognizing the efforts of healthcare professionals, patient associations, and support structures that assist women at various stages of their health journey. The full program for October Rose 2026 is available at the CHU of Nîmes. Information and registration for meetings and workshops can be obtained through the Espace de Rencontres et d'Information (ERI) by contacting 04 34 03 46 09 or email contact.eri30@gmail.com.
