The next major update to Xiaomi's mobile operating system, HyperOS 4, is now in a global beta, according to recent reports. This update runs on Android 17 and is built around two key components: a transparent user interface and a home AI layer. The design features a new "Soft Light Glass" effect, which gives the control center, quick settings, folders, and the locked screen a translucent look with real-time light rendering. The clock on the locked screen can now be resized and placed anywhere, either on one or two lines. Notifications appear as cards at the bottom of the screen, revealing the wallpaper underneath, while home screen folders have shifted from a 1×1 grid to a more flexible 4×2 layout, activated with a simple swipe.
Xiaomi claims that HyperOS 4 offers performance improvements over its predecessor. According to internal tests, apps load approximately 18% faster after nine hours of use. The beta also includes claims of 33% more available memory after eight hours, 30.3% fewer lost images during heavy use, and a 90% reduction in the time needed to scan 10,000 photos in the Gallery. These improvements stem from rewriting key components like the launcher, Weather, and Gallery using a more efficient programming language, though Xiaomi has not specified which one. All these results were tested on a Xiaomi 17 Ultra, a model that may not reflect real-world performance on devices with many third-party apps.
For the AI features, Xiaomi has introduced the Super AI Assistant 2.0 in China, powered by its large language model, MiMo. This assistant can transcribe voice, search the gallery, plan trips, and control smart home devices, including cars. Two new gadgets accompany the assistant: the Inspiration Ball, a small device that slides over text or images to trigger actions, and the Super Island, a bubble near the front camera that shows task status without taking over the screen. However, these features are not mentioned in the global beta announcement, which focuses on the HyperAI label.
HyperAI introduces features like a voice note tool that converts memos into structured notes, mind maps, or to-do lists, and a recorder that allows users to set markers during recording and skip silences during playback. The smart home hub also lets users pin favorite devices in the control center. While the Inspiration Ball might offer functionality similar to Google's Circle to Search feature, which is already available on international models, it is not included in the global beta. Xiaomi also notes that HyperAI features may vary depending on region, language, and device model.
To join the HyperOS 4 beta, users can apply through the Xiaomi Community app for the Xiaomi 17, Xiaomi 17 Ultra, and Leica Leitzphone powered by Xiaomi, starting September 10. A second wave will include the Xiaomi 17T, 17T Pro, 15, and 15 Ultra on September 17. The beta includes the Global and European (EEA) versions of the software, which are available in countries like France. The process involves updating the phone to the latest HyperOS 3 version, accessing the beta testing section in the Xiaomi Community app, and submitting an application. Once approved, the beta will be delivered via an over-the-air update. However, the number of spots is limited, and approval does not guarantee immediate access. Reverting to HyperOS 3 may require manually flashing a ROM, so users are advised to back up their data before testing. Xiaomi has not confirmed a release date for the stable version, though some media speculate it may arrive in October. For users who have already upgraded their Xiaomi 17 to Android 17 this summer, the wait is for the new interface rather than the system itself, aligning with Xiaomi's ongoing high-end product strategy, including the upcoming Xiaomi 18 Fold and Xiaomi 18 Pro.
