Nice Côte d’Azur plans to expand free public transport to younger retirees and healthcare workers, with proposals set for a vote on November 6, 2026.
Proposals for free travel expansion announced
The Métropole Nice Côte d’Azur plans to present proposals on November 6, 2026, to extend free public transportation to retirees under 65 and to certain healthcare workers. These proposals will be considered by the metropolitan council and require its approval before implementation.Current free travel policy for seniors
Currently, residents aged 65 and older can apply for free public transport regardless of income. This policy, which began in September, already benefits 48,000 people. The new proposals would extend this to retirees who retired before 65, as well as to healthcare workers in public and private hospitals.Changes to eligibility criteria
The proposed change would replace the age requirement with a retirement status requirement. Retirees who retired before 65, such as those with long careers, would be included. Current eligible seniors who are still working could keep their free subscription for one year after retirement.Procedure for obtaining free travel titles
Residents over 65 can apply for free travel through the Lignes d’Azur subscription service. The process requires a named title, not just an identity document. The official portal allows online or in-person applications and includes fees for card creation and management.Healthcare workers to be included
The second proposal targets healthcare professionals in public and private hospitals that operate 24/7. This follows a June decision to provide free travel for staff at the Nice CHU, which will take effect on November 7, 2026. However, the proposal does not include all healthcare workers in private practices.Implementation details pending
If approved, the distribution of free travel titles to healthcare workers will need to be coordinated with each hospital. The exact conditions for eligibility and subscription will be published by the Métropole and Lignes d’Azur Authority after the November 6 vote. Current subscribers with paid cards should check the rules for ending their contracts.
