New transport pricing announced

The Aix-Marseille-Provence Metropole and the Régie des transports métropolitains (RTM) have introduced a new pricing system for public transportation. This reform includes higher prices for some travelers and more options for those with lower incomes. The changes are set to be approved on Thursday and will begin on 1st November.

Ticket and subscription price increases

The cost of a single ticket will rise from 1.80 to 2 euros. Monthly subscriptions for all public transport will increase from 49.50 to 56.50 euros, and annual subscriptions will go up from 480 to 548 euros. The Metropole says these increases are to fund service improvements and cover higher operating costs, as stated by President Nicolas Isnard.

Three-tier pricing system

The new pricing system divides the area into three geographical levels. In the first level, including Marseille and nearby areas, tickets cost 2 euros. In the second, which includes Aix and parts of the Berre lake region, tickets are 1.40 euros, with lower monthly and annual subscription costs. The third level, covering areas like Salon and the Blue Coast, has the lowest ticket price at 1.20 euros, with cheaper subscriptions.

Expanded social subscription options

Starting November 1, 2026, scholarship students and some young people will be able to get a free subscription for 20 euros per year. This will significantly lower the cost for students in Marseille and Aubagne. Older people not eligible for certain benefits will pay half the standard rate, and recipients of the adult disability allowance will also get the 20 euro subscription, except for specific services.

Reductions for non-scholarship students

Non-scholarship students will also see some cost reductions. Annual subscriptions in Marseille will drop from 220 to 200 euros, and the cost of a subscription covering all Metropole networks will decrease from 360 to 300 euros. However, the cost for 11–17 year olds outside the solidarity pricing will stay at 220 euros, while another type of subscription will increase from 60 to 80 euros.

Future reductions based on family income

A second phase of the reform, starting in September 2027, will offer discounts based on family income. For example, a single mother working at the minimum wage in Marseille would see her annual subscription drop from 480 to 274 euros after a 50% reduction. These changes aim to make transport more affordable for lower-income families.

Free service in Aubagne delayed

The free public transport service in Aubagne and the Étoile cannot be ended immediately because the area lacks the necessary ticketing infrastructure. The mayor of Aubagne, Jean-Pierre Squillari, is still trying to keep the free service. However, no specific date has been set for when this change will take place.

Expected revenue and goals

The Metropole expects the reform to generate an extra 21.63 million euros annually in the long term. President Nicolas Isnard says this money is needed to improve transportation services, while RTM president Samia Ghali calls the change necessary to modernize an outdated system.
