Since more than twenty years, the École du Nord, based at the Théâtre du Nord in Lille, has been training future artists. Under the direction of David Bobée since 2021, the school supports its students for three years, offering an intensive and personalized education. Online registrations are currently open for three tracks: Mise en scène, Écriture et Dramaturgie (stage direction, writing, and dramaturgy), and Interprétation (performance). The École du Nord functions as a true creation laboratory, providing students with a unique promotion experience through three years of rigorous study. The program includes regular classes in singing, dance, physical preparation, English, and theoretical teachings conducted in partnership with the University of Lille. It is also enriched by practical internships led by major figures in contemporary stage art. For candidates in the Interprétation track, online registrations will take place from October 5, 2026, to January 11, 2027. The selection process requires applicants to be between 18 and 25 years old, hold the baccalaureate, and demonstrate a rigorous theatrical practice of at least 9 hours per week over a year within the last three years. The first round of tests, scheduled from March 29 to April 9, 2027, in Lille, requires the preparation of three scenes: an excerpt from the repertoire, a contemporary play by a living author, and a non-textual free course (such as singing, dancing, physical theater, or performance). Those selected will then attend a four-day practical internship beginning in early May. The Mise en scène, Écriture et Dramaturgie track is aimed at candidates holding a Bac+3 (or equivalent of 180 ECTS credits), aged 18 to 25 years (with a possible exception up to 30 years). The selection process includes a digital file review between September and October 2026, which includes a motivation letter, a moodboard (a visual collage of ideas and themes), and a dialogued scene. The first round will consist of a written test from November 30, 2026, to January 3, 2027, on a prescribed text: Roméo et Juliette by William Shakespeare. A practical internship in Lille in May 2027 will distinguish the finalists. For David Bobée, the director and stage director of the school, leading École du Nord remains the most significant commitment of his career. "I think that of all my jobs, as a stage director, as a theater director, as an activist, that of school director is the most beautiful I have ever exercised," he says, emphasizing the immense responsibility of guiding each new promotion. With nearly 1,800 applications received for the competitions, the selected students enter the school with an already exceptional level of talent. These young artists choose to put their lives on hold for three years to confront the aesthetics of renowned pedagogues, including Kirill Serebrennikov, Lorraine de Sagazan, Thomas Jolly, and Penda Diouf. The support continues beyond graduation, as the École du Nord closely monitors the professional integration of its former students by funding their salaries within companies and partner structures for three years after their graduation. This successful strategy has led to a record employability rate among previous promotions, confirming the vitality of this training program rooted in the Hauts-de-France region.
