A 30-tonne black marble memorial has been built at Shiregreen Cemetery in Sheffield to mark the grave of Michael Collins, who passed away in December 2024 at the age of 51. The monument is located just metres away from a similar shrine dedicated to his brother, William "Willy" Collins, who died in 2020 at 49 in Majorca, Spain. Willy’s memorial, a £200,000 marble headstone, had already drawn attention for its size and was erected two years after his death. The new memorial for Michael Collins stands nearly nine and a half feet tall and includes two life-sized white statues of him. It also features a marble pint of Guinness, a pint glass with the initials "MC," and embossed images of a can of Diet Coke and a bottle of Budweiser. A large sculpture of a watch placed on a chair is positioned beside one of the statues, while the other statue depicts Michael sitting peacefully on a marble bench. The memorial also includes a marble jukebox labeled "Legend Michael Collins," two Irish flags, a CD case with a photo of Michael, and a sculpture representing the four Collins brothers. The monument has sparked debate among local residents. Some have compared it to "a haunted crazy golf" and questioned why the council did not act against the first memorial. One resident said, "It is there because the council did not take action against the first one," while another asked, "So if they didn’t get permission the first time, why is this allowed?" Sheffield City Council clarified that memorials in council cemeteries require formal approval through an application to Bereavement Services, but no approval had been granted before the monument was built. The council is now hoping the family will submit a retrospective application to assess whether approval can be given. Discussions about both memorials are ongoing, and the council has stated it would not comment further. Michael Collins is survived by his wife Girleen, their four children—Paris, Anthony, Montana, and Martin—and his one grandchild, Martin Francis. His daughter, Paris, described him as "a loving family man" who "lived and died for his wife and children" and "doted on his little grandbaby." The other two Collins brothers, Terry and Anthony, are also buried at the cemetery. Terry died at 52 in September 2024, while Anthony, who was 22, died in 2002 after being stabbed at the Afro Caribbean Club on Spital Hill. The widow of Willy Collins, Kathleen, had previously threatened "war" if the monument was removed. The council has not taken action against either memorial, though discussions are still ongoing.
