A 44-year-old woman in Pennsylvania was trapped under a classic Volkswagen Beetle after her e-bike collided with the car on Monday morning. The incident occurred in Prospect Park, where the woman crashed into the Beetle as it turned right onto 11th Street from Lincoln Avenue. According to ABC 6, her cries for help caught the attention of nearby worker Christine Vollmer, who saw only the woman’s legs beneath the car. Vollmer initially tried to lift the vehicle herself before calling emergency services. As more people arrived at the scene, Vollmer realized that greater strength would be needed to free the woman. She spotted Karl Wise, a FedEx delivery driver, and asked him for help. Wise, who joined the rescue effort, described how he and others managed to lift the car on its side and pull the woman out. “I told her, 'Don’t move,'” Wise said. Surveillance video and police body-camera footage released later showed a group of approximately six people working together to lift the Beetle and free the woman. The woman was taken to a nearby hospital with chest injuries and was in stable condition by Thursday, according to Prospect Park Chief Dave Madonna, who spoke to ABC 7 Chicago. Madonna praised the rescuers for their quick response, noting that they used brute force without special equipment or training to save the woman’s life. He also raised concerns about the growing number of e-bike-related incidents, pointing out that Pennsylvania currently does not require e-bike riders to have a license or wear a helmet. “How many more tragedies do we have to see before some type of action is taken?” Madonna asked, advocating for stricter regulations. Despite the recognition, those who helped downplayed their actions. Amelia Cannon, a participant from Nolet Home Care Agency, said she didn’t see herself as a hero. “I wouldn’t say [I’m a] hero, I just helped someone in need,” she said. Madonna later returned to the scene to thank those who assisted, acknowledging their bravery. The Independent has reached out to the Prospect Park Police Department for further comment.
