Rumors about a portable PlayStation console have been around for years, and Sony has recently added more details to the speculation. A recent leak from the site GameGPU, reported by Wccftech, reveals specifics about the console, known internally as Project Canis. According to the leak, the console would be powered by a custom AMD chip built on 3-nanometer technology. This chip would include six Zen 6 processor cores and 24 gigabytes of LPDDR5X memory, a type of low-power, high-speed memory used in many modern devices. Four of the processor cores would be dedicated to running games, while the other two would handle less demanding tasks like operating the system. The console's graphics would be handled by 16 compute units based on AMD's RDNA 5 architecture, which is the next generation of graphics technology from AMD. In portable mode—meaning when it's used as a handheld device—it would deliver 4.91 teraflops of graphical computing power. A teraflop is a unit that measures how much graphical power a device can handle, with higher numbers meaning more detailed and complex visuals. When connected to a TV via a docking station, the console's power would increase to 6.75 teraflops. Despite these figures, the console would internally render games at a resolution of 540p, which is lower than most modern devices. To address this apparent limitation, Sony is reportedly using its PSSR 3.0 technology. PSSR stands for "Progressive Super Sampling Resolution," and it works similarly to Nvidia's DLSS technology, which uses artificial intelligence to upscale lower-resolution images to higher ones. The console would render games at 540p and then scale them up to 1080p, the resolution of its display. Version 3.0 of this technology would also include AI-generated images that help smooth out animations, making the visuals appear more detailed and fluid. After upscaling, the console's effective graphical power would reach around 10 to 11 teraflops in portable mode and about 14 teraflops when docked. For comparison, the PS5 Pro, which is the more powerful version of Sony's current console, has a graphical power of around 16.7 teraflops. The rumored portable PlayStation would significantly outperform Microsoft's Xbox Series S, which has only 4 teraflops of graphical power. Meanwhile, Microsoft is also working on its own portable gaming devices, aiming to compete in this growing segment of the gaming market. The leak suggests that Sony's upcoming console could offer a compelling balance of power, portability, and visual quality.
