Airtel Gabon deploys new network technology

Airtel Gabon, in partnership with Chinese equipment manufacturer ZTE, has begun using a new network technology called FDD+TDD Massive MIMO on its network. This development is part of Gabon’s broader efforts to prepare for the rollout of 5G services.

FDD and TDD explained

The FDD+TDD Massive MIMO solution combines two radio transmission methods: Frequency Division Duplexing (FDD), which uses separate frequencies for sending and receiving data, and Time Division Duplexing (TDD), which alternates between sending and receiving on the same frequency band.

Improved network performance

Razvan Ungureanu, technical director of Airtel Africa, said the new technology significantly boosts the efficiency of the network’s use of available spectrum and increases its overall capacity. This leads to better network performance and a more seamless user experience.

Support from industry experts

The GSMA, a global trade association for the mobile industry, supports this approach. It highlights Massive MIMO as a key technology that enhances the capacity of mobile networks and helps transition from 4G to 5G services.

Gabon’s 5G preparation

Airtel Gabon’s deployment of this technology is part of a larger strategy to optimize existing networks before full 5G deployment. This comes as Gabon works to meet the technical and economic requirements for introducing 5G services.

Challenges in 5G deployment

In December 2025, Gabon’s communications regulator, ARCEP, convened discussions with Airtel Gabon and Moov Africa Gabon Télécom to address the infrastructure, financial, and regulatory challenges of 5G. These included the need for fiber optics, transport networks, and managing the cost of devices and consumer purchasing power.
