SEG Automotive, a company that supplies parts to the automotive and electric vehicle industries, has unveiled the BLM, a new central motor designed for electric bicycles, as reported by Watt Moves. This motor is available in two voltage options: 36 volts and 48 volts. The 48-volt version, which is likely the more powerful option, delivers 80 Nm of torque and weighs just 2.1 kilograms. For context, the Bosch Performance Line SX, a popular motor in the electric bicycle market, weighs about 2 kg but offers less torque, around 60 Nm. The BLM also claims to provide 700 watts of peak power, 250 watts of continuous power, and up to 400% assistance, meaning it can provide four times the rider's pedaling effort under certain conditions. The BLM is already being used in the BH iRS1, a high-end electric road bicycle. The top version of this model weighs 12.9 kilograms and includes a 630 Wh battery, which can be upgraded to 810 Wh by adding an extra battery cartridge. This is not the first time BH Bikes has used a motor from SEG, as the company has previously been an early adopter of SEG’s technology, incorporating one of its motors into one of its models. SEG offers the BLM as a complete system that includes a battery, display, controls, and a mobile app for adjusting different riding modes. However, the company has not yet disclosed the total weight of the entire system, making it difficult to compare the BLM directly to other lightweight electric bicycle systems currently available. This information gap may affect consumer decisions, as weight is a critical factor for many riders, especially those focused on performance and efficiency. The BLM appears to be aimed at electric bicycles designed for weight-conscious riders, including those who ride on roads, gravel paths, and lighter mountain bike trails. By offering high power and relatively low weight, the BLM could appeal to cyclists looking for a balance between performance and portability. As more details emerge, the BLM may become a key player in the growing market for lightweight electric bicycle components.
